Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire. "
It's a great time of the year for high school athletes with the end-of-the-year calendar climaxing with OFSAA Championships.
Among the entries who will be at provincial championships this week are the the Saugeen District Royals who won the CWOSSA " A-AA " Senior Boys Rugby Championship last week at Guelph.
The Royals were prepped for the CWOSSA tournament after a 4 game slate in Bluewater Athletic play meeting the Owen Sound District Wolves and the Sacred Heart Crusaders.
Saugeen District Coach Mark McNeil relates there is a step up from Bluewater to CWOSSA competition but it's not an overly large one, and he credits the Bluewater matches for priming his squad for CWOSSA, an event that climaxed with a 21-10 win over Paris District in the Championship.
Coach McNeil does understand that the next step to the OFSAA Championship is vastly bigger.
Rugby teams from SDSS team have been to OFSAA previously and Coach McNeil has seen first hand how powerful and more significantly, how committed, the top schools are to their Rugby program.
Regardless of wins or losses this week at the OFSAA Championship in Brooklin, McNeil relates the experience is first rate and the Provincial Championships are working examples of how Rugby should be played on the field and how the participants should conduct themselves around the competition.
The OFSAA " A-AA " Boys Rugby Championship begins Thursday and climaxes with the Championship Game on Saturday.
