Federal Ag Minister Lawrence MacAulay is promoting agricultural trade with California and the United States

As negotiations on a modernized NAFTA deal continue, MacAulay says Canada continues to work on strengthening the trade relationship and creating new opportunities for food producers.

The seventh round of NAFTA renegotiations are being held in Mexico City, right now thru until March 5th.

Minister MacAulay travelled last week to Sacramento, California where he highlighted the strengths of agriculture trade with California, noting that Canada is the number one market for California's agriculture and agri-food exports worth $5.4 billion (CAD) in 2017.

The federal and provincial governments are calling on the agricultural industry to help protect Ontario's freshwater through the Lake Erie Action Plan.

Overall, the government aims to reduce the amount of phosphorus entering Lake Erie by 40 per cent, according to a news release.

Ontario Minister of Agriculture, food and rural affairs, Jeff Leal says the agriculture sector continues to be a leader in identifying and implementing ways to reduce phosphorus entering the Great Lakes.

He says by working together, Ontario will continue to address a vital environmental matter.
