American pork producers exported a record amount of pork last year.

In total, producers shipped 5.4 billion pounds of pork and pork variety meat to over 100 countries in 2017.

Those exports were worth nearly 6.5 billion dollars.

In 2017, some of the America's top pork export markets included Mexico, China, Japan, Canada, South Korea and South America.

And the export market is growing.

The National Pork Board in the U.S. has approved a nearly $8.7-million investment for export activities in 2018.

The food industry is worried about rising trucking costs.

Tyson Foods, the world's second-largest meat packer, is among those predicting that will force a hike in food prices.

The tight supply and rising prices were most severe in late January, but even though they have come down by about 15 per cent this month for produce haulers, they are still 20 per cent higher than a year ago.

One of the issues is the introduction of mandatory electronic logging devices in the United States.

So far the agriculture and food industry has a temporary exemption.

But one report out of Florida says truckers are refusing pickups at more than one location because it takes too much time to make pickups at multiple locations.
