The Winter Olympics are now in full swing. In the coming weeks expect to be dazzled and sometimes disappointed by the performances of Olympic athletes in South Korea.
I don’t know about you, but these Olympic Games lost their credibility with the gross mishandling of the Russian doping scandal. Plain and simple, Russia engaged in widespread cheating at the Sochi Games in 2014. The state-sponsored doping met the Russian objective of boosting National pride as the winning host country.
Fast forward to the Pyongchang Games. Russian athletes who were not caught cheating in Sochi are participating. About 180 Russian athletes will wear a non-identifying uniform and be called, quote “Olympic Athletes from Russia”, end quote.
Should they medal, the Olympic flag will be hoisted and the Olympic anthem will play, instead of the Russian anthem. Some penalty for a nation with a history of systemic cheating.
Once again, the International Olympic Committee is tip-toeing around another scandal instead of crushing it. Just as they did with widespread corruption within the Olympic bureaucracy a few years back.
What a shame. The Olympics lost their purity a long time ago. By allowing Russian athletes to participate, these Games are an outright farce.
The cost is to truly clean athletes who train hard, never knowing whether their competitors are juiced.
