An Ontario corn and soybean producer is reeling over his hydro bill.

Curtis Van-Quaethem farms about 10,000 acres near Tillsonburg.

His Hydro One bill last month was nearly 4 thousand 500 dollars.

But nearly 34 hundred dollars of that bill or 75 percent was for delivery.

The elevator on Van-Quaethem’s farm is new and runs by high-efficiency motors. But those upgrades don’t seem to matter come billing time.

He would like to see new calculations or new rates for farmers and other business who can’t afford shutdown periods.

Iowa pork producers are scaling up their barns in light of lower-cost feed supplies and booming pork exports.

As a result of increased revenues, pig building permits have risen to a five-year high in Iowa.

Approvals for new pig barns that can house over 1,250 head, as well as for the expansion of existing barns totalled 451 in 2017.

Construction increased by 12 percent from 2016.

The number of hogs in the U.S. reached an all-time high of 73.2 million as of Dec. 1, 2017, the U.S. Department of Agriculture reported.
