It is like winning the Academy Award for dairy farmers in Canada.

A PEI family has been named a Master Breeder by Holstein Canada.

Allan MacQuarrie operates MacTalla Farms in Bonshaw, PEI with his wife Colleen.

He says it's pretty awesome, a chance of a lifetime for a dairy farmer, and they are pretty excited about the win.

Holstein Canada has been giving out the Master Breeder award since 1929, and there have been only 19 winners from the Island.

This year, the MacQuarries are the only winners in the Maritimes.

They'll be among 20 winners from across Canada honoured at the Holstein Master Breeder banquet in Quebec City, on April 14th.

About 170 livestock including 150 pigs, 12 chickens, and at least 8 horses, were destroyed in a barn fire near Kitchener Jan. 7th.

The barn in Wellesley township had already collapsed by the time firefighters arrived.

Fire Chief Paul Redman says about 70 horses were rescued from the barn by the farm family and their neighbours.

The fire completely destroyed the barn and damaged two nearby silos.

Damage was estimated at $400,000, though that number could rise if the damaged silos need to be knocked down.

The cause of the fire is not known but it is not considered suspicious.
