Making Waves

Learning From The Past

By Roberta Docherty

So, here we are in 2018. This is the time to learn from the past to change the future. People have a way of saying, "You do it" then complaining when they do. 2018 is an election year. It is time to 'put up or shut up'. It is time to remember what happens when you don't get all the information before you vote, or worse don't vote at all. What a shock to those who did not get involved when the US got Trump and Britain got Brexit. Oh the wailing and gnashing of teeth when the voters betrayed those who died to give them the vote. They got what they deserved but did the children deserve it?
This year let's look at what has happened to our communities and say, "I like that" or "This has to be stopped." In 2018, it is not someone else's responsibility. The buck stops at the door of every one of us. If you can handle being on council, run for a position; if not, you can support someone you trust, not just a charming liar. When the town staff forces us to have something that is  not good for us, or they can not behave in a civil way, it is time to step in. In  2018, it is time to show the children how each can make a difference. The time to start is now.
