Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire ".
For our last segment of the year we try to choose the local sporting highlight of the last 365 days.
It's difficult, it's always open for debate, and seldom is there a clear cut choice at # 1.
To that end, the event I've selected as a highlight for 2017 actually contained some personal discouragement.
On April 19th, the Community Fund staged a special recognition night for local athletes Larisa Yurkiw & Jason Crone and what concerned me was the turnout which would be described as okay, but from what I felt was merited for the pair.
Having said that, the night itself was delightful.
Both Larisa, a World Cup and Olympic downhiller, and Jason, a National member of Canada's Wheelchair Rugby team, sat side by side and spoke about their beginnings, their respective avenues to the biggest stages in their sport and the impact the sporting journey had on them personally.
It was beautiful, and I remember looking at my watch thinking how quickly the night was flying by and how I could have easily listened to another hour of their memories and thoughts.
Happy New Year.
I'm Fred Wallace
