Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire. "
The people who follow Major League Baseball, the NBA & Pro Football may disagree with this, but it seems to me the best sports stories and the best sports story tellers are from hockey.
Think of Don Cherry.
Think of the fictional Joe McGrath from the Charlestown Chiefs.
Great stories. Funny stories. Variations on stories. Stories that never get old. That's Hockey.
I say this in light of a new book from David Shoalts titled " Tales from the Toronto Maple Leafs Locker Room. ".
In discussing the book with Shoalts, his opinion is that because hockey players have either a small town background or small town sensibilities, their stories are earthier, richer and better than their sporting counterparts.
Shoalts does concede that story telling can sometimes become tall tales or fictional, as in the great ' George Armstrong sauna sequence ', but overall, piecing together Tales from the Toronto Maple Leafs Locker Room was a great deal of fun for David Shoalts.
