Apologizing For Sexual Harassment

By Ben McCully

I'm sorry. Seriously & genuinely. I'm not a Hollywood bigwig or a part of the upper echelon of the entertainment industry, nor have I been accused of sexual assault, harassment or inappropriate behaviour. But I won't wait until I am before I say I'm sorry, unlike the high profile cases you've been hearing about. That's because at some point in my 35 years, I know I've made some inappropriate jokes. I've made unwanted advances. I've probably made some woman uncomfortable, as unintentional as I can hope these things to be. From half jokes about sharing nude photos to physical compliments I thought at the time were harmless or even positive. I'm sorry. See, sexual harassment isn't a Hollywood problem. It's not a high profile problem. It's a society problem. It may be a half joke that at some point ALL men have been inappropriate, but it's only a half joke. Society has been constructed to elevate men over women over hundreds of years, and it's not right. So it may be a good thing that some powerful people in Hollywood are being brought down, but until everyday people in Canada, Ontario, and in our region can speak up to hold those guilty of harassment accountable in everyday life. THAT will be real progress. Until then, I'm sorry.
