Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire ".
This afternoon at the Credit Union Place in Summerside, Prince Edward Island, seven days of intense National Curling begins with the commencement of the Road to the Roar Pre-Trials Olympic competition.
There are 28 teams competing; 14 women's teams and 14 men's entries, divided into 2 pools of 7 for each gender.
Among the skips in the Women's Division is Owen Sound curler Julie Tippin who is the leader of the Woodstock Curling Club entry.
In a pool play, Tippin and her rinkmates will play 6 round-robin games starting this afternoon with a tough opening match against Shannon Birchard of Manitoba.
Tippin believes the Women's Division is wide open and furthermore based on their tournament and Grand Slam play, she's familiar with all of the entries in the competition.
The event at Summerside will determine the final entries for the Canadian Curling Trials in Ottawa in early December, a.k.a. " The Roar of the Rings "
The Ottawa Trial winners will represent Canada at the 2018 Winter Games in South Korea.
But before Tippin and her rink can think of Olympic Games or Olympic Trials they have to weave their way through the competition at Prince Edward Island this week where only 2 rinks from each gender earn an invite to Ottawa.
