An expansion into Asia could be good news for Ontario beef producers.

Recently a meat processor in Mount Forest was licensed to export to China.

Golden Ontario Products will soon export to a country that consumes about 28 per cent of the world's meat supply.

A company spokesperson says China is known for having very strict import regulations, so having access to that market is an incredible opportunity.

Chinese market access also means Golden Ontario Products is in a position to expand the size of its facility.
Eventually, the company plans to increase its 30-person workforce to upwards of 150 people.

Canada exported $228 million worth of beef and veal products to China in 2015.

Ontario is marking Canada's 150th anniversary and wants to recognize farms that have been in operation since confederation.

Agriculture has been a building block of the province for well beyond the 150 years, and today, our agri-food sector is also one of the most diverse in the world.

It is home to nearly 50,000 farms that produce over 200 commodities.

The provincial government is offering complementary commemorative signs to Ontario farming families, farming communities and farm properties that have been continuously connected to agricultural production for more than 150 years.

Applicants need to apply for a sign by Tuesday, October 31st.

They are designed for being displayed outdoors.
