Ontario Pork and food banks have together donated one million servings of Ontario pork to families.
Ontario Pork's Friends of the Food Bank program and the Ontario Association of Food Banks (OAFB) have just donated one million servings of Ontario pork to families living with hunger.
Executive Director of OAFB, Carolyn Stewart says they are incredibly grateful for the longstanding commitment of Ontario's hog industry.
She says the donation makes a direct and positive impact in overall health and well-being, and in the health and well-being of communities.
Ontario Pork's Friends of the Food Bank program has contributed over $150,000 through this initiative.
With the help of matching funds provided by Food Banks Canada and The French's Food Company to purchase Ontario pork, the OAFB and Ontario Pork have distributed fresh pork to 128 food banks this year.
Campbell Soup wants all of its suppliers to meet a list of animal welfare standards, if they want to retain its business after 2024.
But the list applies to broiler chickens and not to spent fowl where animal welfare concerns are more pronounced.
Some of the new Campbell Soup standards are:
Providing more space for chickens by reducing stocking density to a maximum of six pounds per square foot.
Better environments including litter, lighting and enrichment that meet GAP's new standards.
And processing chickens in a manner that avoids pre-stun handling and instead uses multi-step controlled atmospheric stunning.
