Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire ".
As the calendar turns to October we kiss softball goodbye, we get caught in the in-between stage between remembering what just transpired on the local diamonds and looking ahead to next season.
While not confirmed, I'm willing to bet that the 2018 season will include a Canadian Championship Tournament at Duncan McLellan Park; my understanding is the National Junior Tournament will be here.
And as we look back, among the highlight activities will be the recent Pan Am Qualifying Tournament at the Dominican Republic.
Remarkably, two players with heavy ties to the local fastball scene; Ty Sebastian of the Bluewater Champion Durham Dodgers and Port Elgin's Blake Underwood were members of the Canadian entry.
Team Canada rolled to a perfect 7 & 0 mark in the round robin, only to drop 3 tight one-run ball games in the playoff round to finish outside of the top 5 and regrettably not earn a berth at the 2019 Pan Am Games in Lima, Peru.
Talking to Blake Underwood last week, it was obvious how significant the event was for him; the games, the success, the playoff heartbreak, all of which unfolded as Hurricane Maria roared and threatened the island nation.
Regarding the results, Underwood felt the " Softball Gods weren't with us ", which happens in softball and in sports at every turn.
But the Softball Gods will return, maybe not today, but as we inch closer to 2018, you know they'll be there.
