Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire ".
The 2017 harness racing season at Hanover Raceway concluded on Saturday with a 10 race card that was highlighted by the presentation of Year End Awards.
Horses named " IMNotBad ", " Lis Deo " and " TwoFourRoadie " were the prominent winners and while, unlike Mr Ed, they couldn't speak, I'm sure they were happy to be acknowledged.
There was no doubt the horse people who won awards Saturday were grateful.
Trainers Vicki Gregg and Rebecca Geisel related they were honoured to succeed on their home track at Hanover while Jim Watt couldn't say enough kind words about the track.
Meanwhile, the top driver on the season was Bruce Richardson who won 36 times on the season, a season that included 151 races.
Richardson was asked what winning the driving title meant to him, to which he responded it meant that he was trusted by various horse owners to do the job to the best of his ability week after week at Hanover.
As he spoke, I thought Bruce Richardson personified Hanover Raceway, both now and hopefully for years to come.
Hanover isn't the biggest facility for harness racing.
There are persistent challenges to the operation, not the least of which is a backpedaling provincial government that once fully supported the industry.
And yet, week after week, race night after race night, Hanover Raceway puts on a show that is competitive, social and highly entertaining.
Doing some quick math, it will be 37 weeks until the 2018 live harness season returns to Hanover Raceway.
