Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire. "
Tennis watching for me, generally is confined to the US Open.
I can't explain why it's the US Open and not the Australian, the French or Wimbledon that attracts me, it's just the way it is.
The Rogers Cup events have been but blips on the interest scale....until last weekend.
While sequestered at a cottage near Minden, I watched Denis Shapovalov play his quarterfinal and semifinal matches.
On Friday, Shapovalov defeated Adrian Mannarino in the quarterfinals.
Then Saturday in a tense semifinal, Shapovalov lost 6-4, 7-5 to Alexander Zverev (VAIR'-ev) who would go onto win the Rogers Cup sweeping Roger Federer in the final Sunday.
Could Denis Shapovalov have made the Rogers Cup Final ?
Yes. He almost did. And with a touch more experience in a future match his chances will be better.
Is Denis Shapovalov the next great Canadian tennis star ?
It looks that way for the young Richmond Hill resident.....but in tennis, and golf, we've seen for decades how steep the curve to the top is for Canadian performers.
