Bench Talk / Off The Wire

Elite Girls Hockey School

By Fred Wallace

Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire. "

I spoke to Tory Harshman a little more than 2 years ago, she was departing St Mary's High School in Owen Sound to go play hockey at Robert Morris University in Pittsburgh.

Thirty months later, Harshman is on the move again, heading now to Michigan to study & play at Adrian College...but that's not what we talked about.

Tory Harshman and Shea Tiley are set to conduct the Elite Girls Hockey School next week at the Julie McArthur Regional Rec Centre.

An all inclusive Girls-Only Hockey School is somewhat different than most Hockey Schools or camps.

Harshman explains, she and Tiley remember vividly how often they were required to go out of town to play or to practice in order to elevate their skills as the Owen Sound Ice Hawks program was in its infancy.

Years later, the Ice Hawks have spread their wings, so Harshman and Tiley want to give back, extend the lessons they've learned on and off the ice to further accelerate the growth and opportunities for girls who play hockey in the city & region.

And while the gender and the concept may be somewhat unique to Owen Sound, Harshman concedes the primary goal of the Elite Girls Hockey School is to create an environment for girls to play hockey and have fun.

I'm Fred Wallace
