Bench Talk / Off The Wire

Ha Ha Hockey

By Fred Wallace

Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire. "

In a rarity, I watched the NHL Awards last week, primarily because I was interested in the Expansion Draft selections by the new Vegas Golden Knights.

Both the draft and the awards had interesting and notable moments.

Marc Andre Fleury. James Neal and Vegas resident Deryk Engelland were prominent names and it appears the Knights fans already get the gist of the NHL's regional rivalries as the LA Kings were booed heartily when mentioned.

During the awards, there were some terrific moments; Craig Anderson winning the Masterton Trophy, the salute and spotlight for Bryan Bickell whose career has ended as he deals with multiple sclerosis, plus Nashville GM David Poile's speech was also a highlight.

Having said all of that.........there were many moments when I had to fight the overwhelming urge to flip the channel.

The entertainment, the comedy, the sketches were BRUTAL at times, almost insulting to the intelligence ( even mine !! ), and it truly threatened to wreck was a significant night packed with major NHL moments.

Hockey is a sport that's played hard, played with your head, played with your heart, and while there are funny moments in hockey, very few are as scripted as the NHL Awards Night.

But when the NHL comes to Las Vegas, showbiz is always a consideration.

I'm Fred Wallace
