The Derby

By Fred Wallace

OHL Western Conference Visualization

Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire. "

Suddenly, the Ontario Hockey League season is down to it's final 2 weeks.

In just 10 days the dust will have settled and the playoff picture and matchups will be clear.

So, with 5 teams in a derby in the OHL Western Conference, tell me how wild this scenario is....

The Owen Sound Attack have 7 games to play, all of them against teams with fewer points.

So in my scenario, the Attack go 6 & 1 down the stretch, their only loss coming on March 16th at Windsor against the Spitfires who are excellent at home, but just average on the road.

The Spitfires in my vision, win their 3 home games including tomorrow night against Erie, but falter in their three remaining road games, 2 of which are at Sarnia, the other in Saginaw.

Back to Erie, the current Western Conference leaders have lost 4 of their last 6, and certainly not to powerhouses. So, the crystal ball sees the Otters losing tomorrow at Windsor & Friday at London. The Otters, then go on to win 3 of their last 4, their only loss at home to London.

The Knights ? They manufacture a 5 game win streak but drop their final 2 games on the road at Flint and at Sault Ste Marie.

And finally, the Greyhounds who have been dynamite on the road but puzzling on home ice this year, reverse the trend in my illusion and win all 4 remaining home games but lose on the road at Sudbury and Saginaw.

So when the dream dust settles; The Attack finish first with a franchise record 100 points, Sault Ste Marie gets the 2nd seed with 98 points, London and Erie tie for 3rd with 99 points and Windsor comes in with 92 points.

Far fetched ?
