Hockey Based School Program Thriving
Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire ".
I spent a portion of the last couple of days at the Julie McArthur Regional Rec Centre participating with, but mostly observing, the Hockey Canada Academy program offered at St Dominique-Savio School.
For the first session, I was invited by coaches Marc-André Proulx and Sebastien St-Amant to speak to the 16 students in the Academy about " jobs in hockey. "
Using the Owen Sound Attack as an example, we found 39 full, part-time and volunteer categories that need people to work.
The following day Coach Proulx and Coach St Amant were conducting on ice evaluations of the youngsters in the class using video to compare their progress.
Understand that they're not running a hockey team, but rather offering an active participation based course that has many positive aspects.
Also of note, since it's St Dominique-Savio, the instruction is in French and trust me, I'm not fluent.
In the first year of operation, 16 elementary school boys and girls are involved in the Academy and based on what I saw over two days, I have no doubt their program will swell in numbers and, I'd assume, branch out to other schools within Bluewater and beyond.
