Double Hat

By Fred Wallace

Plater-Attack History

Hi this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire ".

About a month ago, the Owen Sound Attack were at Guelph and were having a pretty good night; leading 8-1 over the Storm with a couple of minutes to play.

In that game, Kevin Hancock had fired his first career OHL hat trick. Plus, both Petrus Palmu and Nick Suzuki were sitting with two goals apiece and so I wondered, ' has there ever been an OHL game in which two Owen Sound players recorded hat tricks ? '

I thought it had happened.... but no way could I cite the date, game or players involved.

So with access to every Owen Sound game played over 27 & 1/2 years, I spent Christmas searching and found there were two occasions  of double hat tricks.

Surprisingly, the first instance came in the miserable season of 1990-91, when the Platers surprised London 9-2 at the Bayshore on January 12th.

Both Chris Driscoll and Jeff Perry had 3 goals games in the victory.

The second occasion took place just over 10 months later, again in Owen Sound when the Platers smashed the Guelph Storm 10-1. In that case, maybe not surprisingly, the 2 Owen Sounders with hat tricks were future NHL'ers Kirk Maltby and Andrew Brunette.

And that's it.

In 27 & 1/2 years, in almost 2,000 games, only twice have two Owen Sounders recorded hat tricks in the same OHL game.

I'm Fred Wallace
