Frank's Legacy

By Fred Wallace

Owen Sound Minor Soccer Loses Notable Founder

Hi this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire " brought to you by your local Auto Logic- the Logical Choice.

The Western Ontario Athletic Association will mark their 75th year in 2017, and as part of the celebration they're requesting communities within the Association nominate special people who have been supporters and boosters of community sports for 20 years or more.

While not in the WOAA, a natural choice from Owen Sound would be Frank Jansen, the Minor Soccer pioneer who passed away last week.

Some 40 years ago, Frank Jansen was a founding member of Owen Sound Minor Soccer. He didn't just get the ball rolling, he stayed with the program and watched it flourish for the better part of 3 decades.

Frank was everything for Minor Soccer; President, Sponsor, Coach, Referee and a major engine that pushed and pushed until the Kiwanis Soccer Complex was a reality- a reality that should be viable for the next 4 decades and more.

He was named as the Volunteer of the Year in the city of Owen Sound in the early 90's and then more than a decade later was deservedly inducted into the Owen Sound Sports Hall of Fame as a builder.

In 2017, the WOAA 75th will honour those in our broadcast region and beyond who have been dedicated and committed to the betterment of our communities through sports.

And while Frank Jansen's work was outside of the WOAA umbrella, his legacy to local soccer personifies exactly the type of individual the WOAA is looking to spotlight.
