The Owen Sound Volkswagen Junior Selects are at home tonight in ISC Fastball action at Duncan McLellan Park as they host the Jarvis Gamblers.
I saw the Brick Brothers Juniors play about a week ago against Palermo, and while they lost both ends of the doubleheader, it's really not hard to picture this team as a major contender when the Canadian Junior Championship tournament comes back to Owen Sound in August.
As much as I liked the Junior Selects, what I liked most was the concept of a 3 team, late May weekend roundabout.
Over the course of the weekend, the Palermo squad played the Owen Sound Seniors 4 times on the Saturday and followed the next morning with a doubleheader against the Junior Selects.
With the current ISC makeup, stacked with 2 teams in Owen Sound and another in Port Elgin, the potential here for an annual weekend of multiple games on multiple diamonds is very high.
What if the Port Elgin Blue Devils, or even the Wyevale Tribe made their way to Owen Sound for that weekend and there were four, if not 5 league teams involved ?
Granted, pitching might be a factor with the potential of so many games taking its toll so early in the season.
But I think an Owen Sound weekend with multiple teams, multiple games all serving as an early season primer would be great for everyone on a variety of levels.
The Volkswagen Junior Selects and Jarvis play game 1 of their doubleheader tonight at 7:30 pm
