What a difference a year can make.
In the winter of 2008, the Owen Sound Volkswagen Junior Selects were concept on paper.
They had a decent idea of who they had for players, and with a vacancy in the hosting duties they managed to finaggle their way to gaining the right to stage the Canadian Junior Men's Fastball.
Bit by bit through the winter and spring, the Volkswagen Junior Selects came togther and by the middle of August, they were among the top 3 Junior teams in Canadian Fastball.
Turn the calendar pages ahead to 2009 and the reputation of the Volkswagen Junior Selects was such that players, good players, if not great players, called to inquire if the Selects have room for them.
By mid winter, Owen Sound essentially completed their roster filling process by getting commitments from Dylan Cunningham & Darrin Newson.
Cunningham, a third baseman, contacted Manager Lee Jacques through Dwayne McKenzie, a hard working cathcer who played for the Selects and Crunch half a decade ago.
Newson, a catcher out of Brantford, was a player the Volkswagen club knew all about and now he'll play for Brick Brothers in 2009.
A year ago, a novel concept. Now, according to the fastball chat lines, a legitimate National Championship contender here in Owen Sound.
