A year ago, my buddy Whitey & I went on a fabulous NHL road trip.
On a Friday, Saturday then Sunday last year, we went from Buffalo to Toronto and then back to Buffalo seeing 3 NHL games in 3 nights.
So successful was the junket, the premise was expanded this year in terms of distance covered and in terms of participants, as 28 SMHLer's went to Buffalo last Friday & then off to Pittsburgh for Saturday afternoon.
The Friday night game at Buffalo was a hockey experience since the Sabres were in against the greatest team in hockey; the one-day/some-day-in-the-future Stanley Cup Champion Toronto Maple Leafs.
The greatest team in hockey doesn't have the greatest goaltending, or they didn't that night, falling behind 4-0 in short order.
But then the Leafs miracle comeback started, much to the delight of the multitude of Leaf fans at the HSBC Arena, which was a staggering visual.
I'm pretty convinced there were vastly more Leaf fans, and louder Leaf fans, in Buffalo Friday night than I've ever seen at Maple Leaf Gardens or the Air Canada Center.
The comeback fell short though, Buffalo winning 5-3 as the Sabres kept their narrow playoff hopes alive.
Following the game the Sabres were busting for another key game at Montreal the next night, but I did manage to wave at former Plater Adam Mair and speak briefly with former Attack defender Andrej Sekera.
I also congratulated one time Attack defender Phil Oreskovich on making the NHL with the Leafs, and while polite, I'm certain Big Phil had no idea who I was.
Tomorrow, we'll talk about Pittsburgh.
