Greyhounds’ Quesnele Named Boston Pizza OHL Player of the Week
Toronto, ON – The Ontario Hockey League today announced that defenceman Michael Quesnele of the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds is the Boston Pizza OHL Player of the Week for the week ending February 7. The first defenceman to win the award this season, Quesnele had six points in three games scoring two goals and four assists. Quesnele and the Greyhounds had three road games in three days with his highlight performance coming Sunday when he scored two goals in one game for the first time in his career. He netted the game-winner on the power play at 12:39 of the first period and later put the game away at 18:48 of the third with a shorthanded goal into the empty net to beat the Brampton Battalion 4-1. He was named second star of the game. Quesnele also contributed three assists on Friday for the third time this season setting up the final three Greyhound goals in the 8-5 win over the Sudbury Wolves. On Saturday night he had one assist despite a 5-3 loss to the Barrie Colts. Quesnele, a 21-year-old from Sault Ste. Marie, ON, is playing in his fifth and final OHL season with the Greyhounds. Already in the midst of the best offensive season of his career, he has 41 points in 48 games including nine goals and 32 assists and is ranked ninth overall in scoring amongst defencemen. OHL All-Stars Casey Cizikas of the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors and Ryan Ellis of the Windsor Spitfires were also considered for the award this week. Both players had six points in three games with Cizikas scoring four goals and two assists while Ellis scored a goal and five assists. In goal, Matt Hackett of the Plymouth Whalers had a goals-against-average of 1.44 and a save percentage of .960 in two starts earning one win.
